I'll start by saying I got a card from my thoughtful husband. A very beautiful card "To My Wife, With Love". (mostly prompted because I was upset he didn't get me one for our recent 20th wedding anniversary)
And after the card? Well, there were no flowers. No evening out with a romantic dinner, or a movie, and certainly not a love-filled getaway weekend with just the two of us. I might have dropped dead of shock had that happened.
It may seem like I'm complaining, but really, I don't care so much about those things, or big gestures...it's more so the thought and feeling behind them that I'm looking for. You know, that "Show me that you love me," mantra that so many men, mine in particular, cringe when they hear it.
Turns out I got me a big gesture after all. My dear hubby is working on remodeling our front two rooms, and that day, he tore down a wall for me. THAT was better than flowers, candy, a movie, or anything else. Finally, in our old, 100+ yrs farmhouse, we will have a room that's larger than a tiny little square or rectangle. A place where the family can gather comfortably for a holiday without people camped out on the floor or steps because there's no room for extra chairs!
I can't wait for it to be done so I can show you all the finished product, but for now, I'll share a before and an in progress picture of my best Valentine's gift ever!
Finding a picture to show both sides of the long narrow room took awhile, and this ended up being a Christmas decorating picture from 2008. (my kidlets are all growing so fast!) Look above the recliner--the kids started our demo by peeling off sections of the wall paper when they were toddlers. I am going to miss that carpeting though...not!
Wayne's turn to demo. :)
And now the wall between the two rooms is down! Happy Valentine's Day to me!
Thank you, Honey! Love you!
Oh my! As a woman whose spouse has the habit of wisecracking that one of these days he'll go the hardware store to buy a "round-to-it" when his remodling projects arent getting finished as promptly as they should, I understand your joy!
ReplyDeleteThat is a wonderful Valentine surprise. I am still waiting for my photography dark room, four years and counting....
best of luck with the remodel.
I love that, "round-to-it". LOL I hope you get your dark room sooner than later.
DeleteIt wasn't quite a surprise seeing how the demo started beginning of January, but the wall came down on V-day, so it was great.
Thanks for the good luck wishes. The bathroom starts soon--then I'm definitely going to need it! :)
Wow, amazing how much space that gives you! Looks like a great start to your project. Can't wait to see more of it. Glad you had a nice Valentine's!
ReplyDeleteThanks, it's very cool! How was your getaway? :)
DeleteYou mean you got a real card, one he signed and you got to keep???? My husband pulls a random card off the rack at Walmart when we're shopping together and says, "if I bought you a card, it would be this one." I read it, say "that's nice honey", then he sticks it back in the rack. Not real romantic, but saves us tons of money.
ReplyDeleteI love the remodel project so far, you'll love having those rooms combined. Are you going to open things up between the kitchen and dining room as well, or leave that wall where it is?
I remember you telling us about how you and Steve give cards. Hey, if it works for you guys, it works. I've told Wayne that I'd like a card, even (and preferably) if it's a .50 from the dollar store. (2 for $1)
DeleteThe wall between the kitchen and the old dining room has to stay where it is because the stairs are in between. Otherwise I'd have no problem taking it out. :)
Stacey,
ReplyDeleteThat would be the best gift, getting a room remodeled. Far better than flowers, candy, or even a weekend away and right now I'd love a weekend away. I look forward to seeing the final product. :-)
And best if you're doing it by choice and not necessity, right? I hope you get your weekend away. No one deserves it more!
DeleteI think your Valentine's present is awesome! I have trouble getting Paul to carry out the trash, so there's no way I'd ever let him start any type of remodeling project...LOL Right now I'm working on getting him to move the fridge so I can clean under the darn thing. He's been putting it off forever because it requires him having to disconnect the water hoses. *sigh* I should have told him that's what I wanted for V-day. At this rate, I'm going to have to save it for Mother's Day...LOL
ReplyDeleteThanks, Donna. Good luck with the fridge. :) (I put little furniture coasters under mine and now I can move it myself.)
